This is a more specific massage, that generally concentrates on one group of muscles.

Sport massage can be part of the preparation for a sporting event and for a warming-up or cooling down (respectively directly before or after a sporting activity).

However it does not replace the actual warming-up and cooling down exercise.

As a stimulating massage, the sport massage increases body warmth and blood-flow. The increased blood-flow facilitates the greater energy demand of the muscles. Warm muscles are more supple and less vulnerable to injuries than cold, and damage is less likely to occur. A calming and relaxing massage after exercise, helps to remove toxic waste (lactic acid) from the body, hereby reducing the chance of stiffness and muscle pain.
